In the event that it wins the next general election, Pakatan Rakyat will fall apart soon after it starts to rule, political analyst Aspan Alias has predicted. He says this is because none of the three Pakatan parties is capable enough to lead the coalition. What is clear, he adds, is that there is constant bickering among the three allies.
“It’s not that we don’t want Pakatan Harapan to win the general election, but the reality is that it will be quickly buried if it gets the mandate to govern the country,” Aspan says in his latest blog entry. “We don’t know which party is leading Pakatan Harapan. Is it PKR? Is it DAP? Or is it Amanah, the PAS splinter?”
He says DAP strongman Lim Kit Siang was speaking like a daydreamer when he assured the Malays recently that they had nothing to fear if Pakatan were to take the reins of power after GE14.“Lim said that Pakatan Harapan would be guided by the Federal Constitution and would look after all the people and take their specific interests into consideration.”
Aspan points out that Pakatan Rakyat gave the same solemn pledge during the run-up to GE13. “However, the alliance that made the promise has itself been buried, much less shown any capability to fulfil its pledge.” He notes that DAP seems to be asserting its leadership of the coalition, but he says it has yet to convince the people that it is qualified for the role.
“DAP kicks up a fuss in Selangor to flex its political muscles but, at the same time, does not allow other political parties in Penang to speak up. It hasn’t the ability to convince the people that it will not continue to kick up a fuss or turn even fiercer if it finds itself in power after GE14.”
Aspan speaks disparagingly of Amanah, saying those who are determined to continue building the party are just wasting time “and life itself.” He warns that Amanah will eventually be reduced to being a doormat for its allies.
“That’s the reality,” he says. “If our lifespan is long enough, we may be able to witness how the story ends.”
