Chinese Disappointed With Adenan: BN Will Lose Support In #Sg Besar & #KualaKangsar?

The new Cabinet of Sarawak state has a total of three deputy chief ministers without a Chinese. This has caused a stir in the Sarawak Chinese community. The Chinese community is of the view that if Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem is adamant in not appointing a Chinese deputy minister, this may lead to Sarawak Chinese voters no longer support Barisan Nasional.

They are disappointed of Adenan’s ignorance on Chinese community’s wish and hope that Adenan would be able to carry out some remedy by appointing a Chinese as deputy chief minister.

Kuching Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Datuk Wee Kok Tiong in accepting interview by China Press said his view on the matter is that the message should be delivered to Chief Minister that a Chinese deputy chief minister should be appointed in the Sarawak new cabinet.

He said the president of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) cum Local Government Minister Datuk Sim Kui Hian is an ideal candidate to be appointed as Chinese deputy chief minister. He regrets that in Adenan’s announcement of new cabinet line-up for Sarawak, despite additional three Deputy Chief Ministers are included, none of them is Chinese. The move has disappointed the Sarawak Chinese community.

Chinese community is disappointed

Chinese education activist in Sarawak Cai Wen Duo states that he is extremely disappointed with the fact that the new Sarawak cabinet is without a Chinese deputy chief minister. During the campaigning of the state election, Adenan has been telling voters that he is a Chief Minister for all. To be a Chief Minister for all, he should understand that a Chinese deputy chief minister is the request of Chinese community for an official position.

Cai is also a member of board of directors for SRK Chung Hwa in Kuching and the school expansion plan committee chairman for four primary schools. In an interview, he said Adenan has in fact, during campaigning period said if the Chinese support Barisan Nasional, he would consider appointing a Chinese as deputy chief minister. Despite the words do not constitute a promise; the position of a Chinese deputy minister has been an issue during the campaign. Some of the Chinese votes returned to Barisan Nasional due to this.

“Sarawak Chinese community is looking forward to a Chinese deputy chief minister in Sarawak cabinet but this turns out to be nothing. Hope the Chief Minister can amend Sarawak constitution or adopt some plan to carry out remedy by appointing a Chinese deputy chief minister.”

George Chan: fulfilling the wish of Chinese community

Former SUPP president Tan Sri George Chan is of the view that whether Adenan has made such promise during state election, he should appoint a Chinese deputy chief minister to fulfil the wish of Chinese community in politics.

He advises Adenan in his capacity as a veteran politician so that Barisan Nasional does not suffer a setback due to Sarawak Chinese voters.

Chan is also former deputy chief minister in Sarawak. When he was interviewed, he said Adenan added a total of three deputy chief ministers without appointing a Chinese. This should not be the case.

He stresses that the Chinese community is a big group in Sarawak. There should be a Chinese deputy chief minister.

He is of the view that Dr Sim Kui Hian is the best candidate for Deputy Chief Minister. The party has won seven seats in the state election. Of the total, six seats are in Chinese areas. In the eyes of Chinese, the Barisan Nasional is ignoring the wish of Chinese community by not appointing Dr Sim as the deputy chief minister.

He says even if United People’s Party (UPP) formerly led by Finance Minister II of Sarawak Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh merges with Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party where both parties would have a total of eight seats, only two seats are in Chinese area. They should not be requesting for the position of Deputy Chief Minister.

Mah Siew Keong: illogical

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong is of the view that none of the three deputy chief ministers is a Chinese is illogical.

He says more than 30% of population in Sarawak is Chinese. Chinese voters are also supporting Barisan Nasional. The new cabinet should include a Chinese deputy chief minister.

Mah is the president of Gerakan cum Teluk Intan MP. He said this to reporters when officiating the oath-taking ceremony of the 38th Lower Perak Cycle and Motor Dealers’ Association this afternoon.
